👑 Meknes is the most underrated of Morocco's four imperial cities. Built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century to rival Versailles, this UNESCO World Heritage city boasts some of the country's most impressive monuments yet sees far fewer tourists than Marrakech or Fes.
🏰 An Imperial Legacy
Moulay Ismail dreamed of creating the grandest city in the Islamic world. He built 25 kilometers of walls, massive granaries to feed his army of 12,000 horses, and palaces that rivaled European courts. Much of this impressive infrastructure survives today.
Getting There
Meknes is just 60 km from Fes, making it easy to visit both cities. Rent from OLIVIANA CAR and combine Meknes with a trip to the Roman ruins of Volubilis, just 30 km away.
